Hey everyone. Having fought the titanic duel that is exams and having the scars to prove it I can proclaim - I AM ALIVE! Anyway, I'm back, lots of projects to do and really wanting to see what I can do if I hook up a harddrive to my car's CPU

I see Ogg Vorbis have a new playback codebase that implements ogg vorbis playback using on integers. It is called Tremor.
I'm thinking of trying to decode Ogg Vorbis in realtime in software on an AVR.
It was going to be mp3 but Frauhoffen has stuffed that up by patents

I just got my first order from Futurlec. How good is this - the NiMH 2100MAh are sony brand! and only AUD$12.64 for 4 of 'em Although just to let you know they ship directly fom Thailand - that is why it can take a little time (only took exactly 1 week for this order (once backorder part substituted) but I am next to the airport Anyway it is worth the wait as their prices are bloody awesome. eg MAX232 are $2.00 - no minimum order! And postage is only $4 Futurlec are a god send! Now my 2nd order should arrive this week too fingers crossed!

I have started to contruct the Projects page. I've added Bones' very exciting Terminator robot photos and will add text as soon as I can.
I have also put some photos of my latest project - controlling an LCD display.
If you have anything you want put in the project's sections (they don't have to be complete) then don't hestitate to contact me so you can show the rest of the world what you're up to!

Yep - all very interesting.
I was thinking that you could have a nut and bolt (a really long bolt running the length of each segment) arrangment.
the nut would be fix to the arm and then have the dc motor would spin the bolt. That way once the motor stopped the nut and bolt configuration shouldn't slip (well not too mcuh anyway). That way you'd save your power and motors.
You could even have a brake grasp the threaded bolt (a gripper of some sort)once the motor stopped and since you would have just immobilised the bolt and the nut is fixed anyway, you'd stop any slippage.

What would be the best way to create a home-build robotic arm with a wrist, elbow and shoulder?
I assume a long threaded screw attached to a dc motor that was controlled by a Microcontroller would be the best way of accurate control each joint.
Would it be sufficient to encase this all in PVC or would it be best to have a flexible exterior?

Yeah that is a great suggestion. I'm thinking of setting up a "bargains" section or something similar so ppl can post where they found cheap items- What does everyone think?

Anyone know a good source of decent (and decently priced) DC motors in Australia?
Obviously the kind useful for robotics

yeah that is the kicker I bought the following at Dick Smith (slightly cheaper elsewhere but not enough to justify the fuel to cross town) Universal mount plate - $~9.50 Twin motor gear box - $~18.50 Tank tracks - $~15.00 the motors are independant so you can skid steer. The gearbox is smaller than I thought and the Tracks are larger. I'm almost finished putting them together so I'll post a photo of them together so you can get an idea of the size it is. And here it is: Note the CD is there to show you how big it all is (and to promote linux

I'm currently mucking around with the Tamiya Tank-track kit and the associated dual motor dual gearbox powertrain. I'll post some photos when done. Anyone else using these?
