Good call on the site, Dingo. I've just checked out the first article www.wrighthobbies.net/guides/circ1.htmand the pics of the solder joints look exactly like the ones I used to make when I was starting out!!! Such realistic presentation! There's nothing more annoying than to have pics of perfect joints / PCBs / gardens / furniture cabinets / you-name-it, that lead a beginner to wonder if what they have done is even remotely acceptable... One thing though, if you buy a reasonable quality soldering iron then do not file the tip!!! And what's a reasonable soldering iron? Anything made within the last 30 years for electronics use (not automotive / metal work) should be fine. How many Watts? At least 25 - the more the better, but not more than 50, especially for a handheld iron. A low wattage iron takes too long to heat up again when making lots of joints in a construction frenzy session. And a big jobby such as my 80W with fatboy tip is intended for soldering wires to lugs, not IC pins to lands! What about a soldering station? Only for Mr. Jones nextdoor and the guy in the repair lab doing a million joints a day, or as a xmas present for yourself - kind of like having a luxury car... The Tamiya Double Gearbox they show how to build, also known as the Twin Gearbox, is the same one that I used in TankBot. To be honest, I didn't find the instructions that came with any of the Tamiya motor/gearboxes all that difficult to follow, but it's all horses for courses as usual, Don . Cheers
