Anybody going to see Asimo slut its way around the stage? I'm thinking of going to the Parramatta event from Nov 30 thru 2 Dec. I'll take my boy with me - he'll love it.
Did I say "slut"? Gosh, I meant to say "strut".

My wife assumed that I would want to go ... but having seen some videos and knowing that it's just a carefully rehearsed show to make asimo appear to have some intelligence; I wasn't going to bother.
On second thoughts maybe I'll take my son, and his friend who is into robots.

I'm going to go on the Saturday (1/Dec). I've got no idea what time of day yet - it will probably be midday or early afternoon. Hopefully we'll get to see the show on the Saturday, otherwise I'm not sure if I want to travel all that way again for the Sunday too.
Maybe it might be worthwhile seeing it Friday 30/Nov, because I have to take the morning off work for other things - maybe I'll just take the whole day off...
What day/time were you thinking of going, Don?

Bloody bastards. They aren't coming to Western Australia by the looks of it. I'm off to Brissy but it gets there a week after I leave. And I missed it when it was over here a year ago.
Honda hid their walking robots from the world for I think it was 10 or 20 years. Letting everyone else watch other robots fall over. When they got it right, they showed the world. I wonder if they are doing the same thing now.
Showing of Asimo and then bring out a fully advanced product in a few years for home use.
Maybe.

You could be right, Bones.
What sort of jobs would Asimo do around the house I wonder? Maybe something more for the kids like helping with homework - or maybe big "kids" first, "bring me a beer, cheers As" while watching the cricket. Vacuuming? Plug in the "groinal socket attachment" and let him rip! What would purchasers of the new technology do with it? Probably show it off to their other rich friends! As usual, I will have to wait for the price to come down.
And it now looks like I will be there at the Paramatta show on the Saturday - or maybe the Sunday. But definitely not the Friday. I think...
Cheers to you all Rod
P.S. I emailed Dingo a while back about where he might be and I think he's deserted us. He replied saying that he was busy having a life now and that maybe one day he would fix up the new AAR site and get back into the thick of things - however, no guarantees. That was the impression I got.

Dingo's still away - he must have a good missus ;D
I went to the Asimo show and I came away a little disappointed. Both my wife and my boy went with me and although the opening theatrics had a few "spine tingling" moments, there was so little they did with Asimo. Just some rubbish slow-motion dancing on the spot, a walk and awkward looking "run" (more of a jog really) across the stage and that was it. No climbing stairs, no bending, no squats. And they reckoned Asimo had "collision detection" but they never demo'ed that either. So many promises, so little delivered.
But oddly enough, my 4.5 y/o boy thought it was great. He had no concept what to expect so he clapped away quite happily.
Honda also badly picked their target audience too. Asimo was voiced-over as a horny teenage boy cracking banal teenage boy jokes when in fact the audience consisted only of dads and moms and kids under 10.
And to add insult they "randomly" picked a youngish woman from the audience who got up on stage and who Asimo then proceeded to get his jollies off with and she "demo'ed" things that Asimo could do like follow an RFID tag and mirror-imitate (like that Swedish girl already did with her university robot we posted about on this forum). Which looked fake anyway. And after she got off the stage I watched where she went and it wasn't back to her seat - she stood at the back (the tent entrance) with the crew for a minute or two and then discreetly exited the tent. I knew they wouldn't get some random stranger who might break Asimo (or try to steal it!), but the audience probably didn't know this, but still they didn't have to fake it - it cheapened the whole thing.
... And same thing with letting the kids dance with Asimo at the end of the show. They kept the kids away from Asimo at all times and as far to the edges of the stage as possible, with two professional dancers blocking access to Asimo just in case it fell on the two kiddies and Mum and Dad sued Honda for all they were worth.
Overall, I came away thinking: "What was all that about?"
And the bastards tried to trick us by saying look under your seats, you may have won a car. "Sorry! Only joking!" Yeah, right you pricks. Do they think any of us are likely to buy a Honda car now?

Sounds as though you didn't enjoy the travelling medicine show.

I f*cking hated it No, that's not totally true. It was at least worthwhile seeing what is possible, given time and research. I'm certainly glad it was free though... P.S. I noticed Bones hanging-out at the Aus Robotics site: www.ausrobotics.com/drupal/He's online name is, wait for it, "TinMan". See, I knew nobody would have guessed that! Howdy, Bones! Me thinks there's a little more action going on there - I'm really thinking of joining up too. Cheers of the festive season to all Rod
