They are the Oatley 433Mhz transceivers. They cost $33 each but appear quite easy to use. They use an IDC connector thus I hacked up an old floppy cable to plug them into. The setup is the PICAXE on the left sends a bit (lights green LED as well) and the PICAXE on the right sounds a piezo and lights up the red LED when it receives (or thinks it received) and bit.
The transmittion isn't perfect and requires some tweaking but sofar it is pretty reliable and with a little CRC should meet my needs.
