Hi Guys, I've finaly pulled my finger out and bought the gear I need to cnc my machines. I got 6 X 300 oz/in and 2 X 500 oz/in stepper motors. I also got the balls screws to suit my lathe and milling machine. I'm just going to use the lead screws for my router. Whats the difference you ask. Balls screws are basicly a ballbearing thread. 0.001"-0.004" backlash where lead screws the nut can wear because the nut is alloy bronse.
So I will have a cnc lathe and cnc mill and a cnc router very soon. Mass production of parts. WOO HOO

Hey Bones,
What CNC router are you making? Are you working from plans?
Cheers.

oops, should have done a search first. How has the Zoltar worked out? I would love to build one but he doesn't sell the plans anymore. Any chance you could help me out ;-)

Hi Emzed, I would love to help you out but I don't have the plans. We built 5 of these as a group and I just got mine cut out as one of the 5. I don't think the guy that bought the plans will give away freely as he paid for them. You could email the guy that made them and see if he will give them away since he is not selling them any more. Otherwide there are a lot of free plans out there. And a mate has built 3-4 machine from scratch using metal plate and angline.

Thats cool. I've been addicted to the cnczone forum for the last two days. Getting some cool ideas for a cnc router design.
btw... Where did you get your steppers and ball screws from?

Hi Guys, I've nearly finished the main axis on the lathe. I've been a bit busy rebuilding my shed. I have paneled all the walls around my bench. The bench is 3M wide by 1.2m deep. It's a U shape with the sides 1.2M wide by 600mm deep. One side has the lathe on it and the other has the milling machine. So now there is shelving on the main desk as well. I got a bench off a mate that had his lathe on it. it's about 1.2M X 1.8M. So I fitted castors with wheels brakes on the bottom. It's great. It fits my drill, belt sander/linisher, vice and grinder. The best part is if I need room I just wheel it out of the way.
The cnc milling kit for the Seig X3 turned up at work this week so we are fitting it. CNC stuff here I come. Very exciting.

Has anybody seen the latest (January) Elektor magazine with the Colinbus milling machine kit that theyr'e running as a construction article? www.elektor-electronics.co.uk/default.aspx?tabid=141is the link you want. They actually provide the machine metalwork too, not just the electronics, software, and instructions. There's more to come in later issues. It's not cheap though, probably around $4K in Australian money...

Hi Guys, I saw that and had a good laugh when I saw the specs. 0.0075 mechanical resolution. what the. Using a plastic nut on an acme thread. Maybe only for the first 10mm movement in it's life. Plastic or wood just I'd say. You can buy an Sieg X3 milling machine and a kit for nearly that price and do solid steel cutting. As for circuit boards. No way. You just can't do better than photo etch. Maybe drilling the holes but thats about it.
Sorry to disapoint anybody. Great project but I'd probably only use it for balsa wood in R/C planes.

Hi Guys, Thought I would just let you guy know how things are progressing with the cnc stuff.
The Lathe is up and running. I've done a couple of dry runs. And it's working a treat. A bit of a hasel setting up Mach3 software but all up and running.
I have a bit to learn yet but I think I better get some plastic to play with first.
Next is the Milling machine. I'm getting a new base for mine as the old one is a bit doggy.
Then the router is next after that.
Then I'll need to spend some time doing the designs for the robot.
Cheers Bones

I've nearly finished the main axis on the lathe. I've been a bit busy rebuilding my shed. OMG! How big is this lathe (or should it be L A T H E ) that you had to build the shed around it ? Seriously though, do enjoy your holiday and post some snapshots (on the forum, of course) ;D

Hi Guys, It's been pretty quiet. I've nearly finished the cnc mill. 2 more nuts and it's done. Then a mini pcb/desktop router and another router. I've started collecting all the bits. All I have to do is start putting it all together. And a bit of robot stuff in the middle there somewhere.
