There is a new board available from Atmel that runs linux and RRP is US$69. I posted a story here: [a href="http://dingo.110mb.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=17&Itemid=1 "]http://dingo.110mb.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=17&Itemid=1[/a][/url] The board runs normal Linux 2.6.18 (included), has 32MB of SDRAM, 8MB Flash, 8MB Dataflash and 63 I/O pins. It has headers for connection to anything. Included on the board are 2 ethernet ports, 1 USB 1x UART and an SD card slot. Atmel have released a free SDK with IDE for both Windows and Linux.

It's looking as though AVR32 is the way for me to go ... a good amount of 32-bit CPU grunt, and good programmability with public domain tools, libraries, and even a choice of (linux) OSes - and so affordable !
However I'm not in a rush to get one of the first off the production line ... as Botman suggested, there's plenty I can do first with my PC, a USB webcam and RoboRealm software. Then add a servo controller and a couple of servos for pan and tilt. And THEN start thinking about integrating it into a mobile platform. In the mean-time, there's plenty of reading for me to catch up on ;-)
Cheers,
