Someone with more microcontroller experience than me might be able to answer this, are there microcontrollers readily available (in Australia) that are powerful enough to decode MP3 and other heavy tasks or is it still better to use old PC bits and pieces and interface them through serial ports etc to the rest of your project?

If you want an MP3 player for re recording etc. You are best looking around at the ones availible. Very cheap these days. Or a pocket pc might be the go. The one I've got is 400MHz has wireless, keyboard, bluetooth a usb sync connection and it is possible to output serial on some models. Has a touch screen. microphone and Audio out. I might be the cheaper way and have full connection with your main PC. Mine will be used as the remote control for my robot, video feed, voice reconition etc.

Hey, I got the HP Ipaq 4350. The one with the keyboard. Next time I'm not getting the keyboard. You are best to get something like the Ipaq 2210 that has Compact flash and SDIO ports. With the compact flash you can get a IBM microdrive 1GHz Hard drive for them and I'm told you can get and external HDD to fit. I think the speed is a bit less than the 400MHz. There are new models comming out at the end of the year that are 500MHZ. Bones

Thanks. I remember years ago when I was looking at building a car mp3 player (never had enough money - or a car at the time ) I saw someone was producing motherboards for standard Intel / AMD chips that measured 5.5 inches suqare I think, anyone know anything about those?

Hi, That one is the next model up from mine. It won't be coming into Australia as far as I know. I saw an MP3 player the other day that was a cigarette light plug that had a dial on it to pick the FM frequency that it transmitted the music to. It has a usb port on it so you put the songs on your USB key and plug it in, it gets it power from the lighter socket in the car and you listen to it on your radio. I think it was about $60. Very sweet. I was looking at the same mp3 player years ago too. lol. All they are now is a tny chip under a blob of epoxy. rod
