vacuum or sweep?

I've still been thinking about an autonomous vacuum bot. But was thinking, does it need to vacuum or is sweeping good enough. I was thinking of limiting it to hard floors anyway. hmmm...
I like the cyclonic idea but thats too hard to get high air velocity in such a small chamber. Plus power consumption would probably be prohibitive.
But sweepers wouldn't use anywhere near as much power as a vacuum and would probably still do an alright job of picking up dust and dog hair etc. Maybe if a have only a slight vacuum from a small fan going through a filter to ensure i don't flick up more dust than i catch.
Anyone else tackled the vucuum part of a mobile bot?
