That is a great find. I've also had great success in old laser printers (and I assume other types would be equally as good). I've found it is great to pull a stepper motor and a whole bunch of cogs that already work together and then just "re-purpose" them. Gots to love da eBay BTW those cheap servos you see on eBay, the green 17 gram ones are pretty good and well built and that seller has an even cheaper non eBay store here: www.bidproduct.com/part/Product_list_SERVOS_1.html

Sorry Bones, seems like Brisbane is the hub You'll just have to come on over Ok, so we now have 3 confirmed Brisbane people in the community (Michaelg, Dan and me) and you know what they say, three is a crowd so I reckon we should get together. I think Dan is busy at the moment but hopefully he'll re-surface and show off his very nice bot. I can bring along my "blind " carpet rover I'm just North of the city and Dan is just South so I'm not sure where is a convenient location. Anyway if you are in need or finding supplies in Australia or that post to Australia easily don't forget to check out the links page www.users.on.net/%7Esymes/links_tree/links.htmBTW how big are you thinking of making your "Rembrant"?

G'day, seems like a few of us here have programming backgrounds and want to add the real world to our list of interfaces Do you program in C mostly or something else? What sort of painting robot? something like the Scribbler (carpet rover with pen attached) or like an arm that draws on a canvas? Both are cool. oh yeah and Welcome!

I too came to it via programming PCs. Always wanted to have the PC control motors to make the train set I had in my childhood better. Never did get my Amiga500's parallel port to control anything. I think I finally tipped over when the C/C++ books I was reading crossed into some references to embedded systems. Hence why I usually think of a software solution before a hardware one

Hmmm, seems like we are starting to get a few Brisbane-ites here If two's company and three's a crowd, how many make a robotics club? As soon as I have time I'll try and organise a get together if people want to. LEt the solder floweth over

Bones (creator of the Terminator project) is in WA.
I'm in Brisbane. Of all the members I think only NT is not represented, can't remember if we have a tasmainian or not?

ahhhhh, I thought when you said "Wish we had something like that here in SA." I thought you must have meant ourside the country as the website is for the whole of Australia It seems like everywhere I turn these days I'm meeting South Australians in the flesh or online Got any pictures of the rover bot in action? What sort of intelligence have you given it/ planned for the future? I've got a mental list of cheap surpliers or sensors etc for when I next build something using the tamiya tracks. Yeah, the simmstick modules from dontronics look pretty good, never seen one "in the flesh" though I agree, bascom is the perfect tool for giving rovers etc "life". Which AVR are you using?

I'm 22, currently live in Brisbane. Love to program and have done so since age 11. (Amiga Basic, QBasic, C, C++, Visual Basic then a bit of everything else) Have an MCSD(VB6) and a B.Comm(UQ). Currently studying law. Always loved machines, electronics etc but had no relatives or friends to influence me in that direction. After taking apart anything I could get my hands on to see how it worked I recently started reading books in the area of electronics and robotics. Found there was little in the way of websites devoted to robotics in Australia and so started this site to address that fact and provide a place for Australian robotics to flourish (or at least tell each other about bargains associated with Robotics Love to weld and build things when I get the time. Or program (mostly OpenGL C++). I am astounded by the great info all the members of this site have contributed so far! Keep it up!
